Hound of the Month- May 2013

OZBUFFINATIC

Image

This month’s Hound is well known here on the forums as he can almost always be found in the chatbox, willing to help out someone or just talk. On May 17th he crossed the 100K Gamerscore mark with flair, and is now busy working on the next milestone. He is also a site boosting coordinator, which has allowed quite a few new people to be able to join sessions.

CM: When did you first get into gaming?

oz: I first casually got into gaming in the late 1980’s early 1990’s with the Atari 2600 and SNES systems, when it wasn’t about completing games , just about doing one thing better than my brothers or friends. I started getting a bit more serious with the Nintendo 64, then got a PS2. When I started working with my younger brother in 2006, I purchased his Xbox off him when he got his Xbox 360 and got to play games like Bards Tale. I got the 360 in early 2008 when the Xbox started playing up and wondered why I didn’t just jump straight onto getting a 360 in the first place. Just imagine how much higher my gamerscore would be now.

CM: What is your favorite game (360 or otherwise)?

oz: This is a tough question, it is a toss up between several games with it being too hard to choose between Fable II, A Bard’s Tale, Baldur’s Gate 2: Dark Alliances, Dragon Age and Kingdoms of Amalur. As you can tell my favourite genre of gaming is the RPG’s. I also like the Forza games and the Lego Games (especially the way that they don’t take the game seriously – the producers could be honorary Aussies).

CM: How did you get your gamertag (ozbundyboy) and your forum name (ozbuffinatic)?

oz: When it came to creating a gamertag for my account I had a lot of trouble thinking of a username. I had been using ozbuffinatic as a name in chatrooms for about 7 years . ozbundyboy came about because of being an aussie, my favourite alcohol being Bundaberg Rum, which is colloquially known as bundy and being a male. The gamertag would have been ozbundybloke but ozbundyboy sounded a lot better. In relation to ozbuffinatic, it was a play on the fact that when I created the gamertag I was an Australian fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and a member of several Yahoo groups devoted to the show, or another way of saying Aussie Buffy Fanatic.

CM: Where do you live in Australia? What is the scenery/weather like there?

oz: I live in Ballarat (original spelling Ballaarat), Victoria which is a regional city about an hour’s drive north west of Melbourne. Ballarat is where the rowing events from the 1956 Melbourne Olympics were held. The town is renowned for it’s heritage buildings with quite a few buildings in the cbd area having been built in the time of the gold rush in the 1850’s.

Image

CM: What do you wish people outside of Austalia knew about it?

oz: Firstly I wish that more people knew how to say Australia. A lot of Americans say “Orstralia” yet say “Ostria” yet the “Aust” of both countries are pronounced exactly the same way. I also wish people knew more about Aussie food and culture and the difference between Australian and New Zealand accents. Also that Fosters Lager is not the most loved beer in Australia, more people like drinking Victoria Bitter, Carlton Cold, Crown Lager and other beers. And lastly, we don’t throw another shrimp on the Barbie (we call them prawns fyi), most bbq’s involve cooking snags (sausages or bangers as the brits call them), steak, chops, kebabs and hamburgers. The salad must have beetroot in it and you definitely need cheese and fried onions.

CM: When you start playing a new game, how do you go about it (do you just play? Do you look up achievements or guides?)

oz: In most cases I put the game in and just start playing. The main time I look up achievements or guides is when I get stuck when trying to do things in the game or need to find out how you go about achieving the goal.

CM:What made you want to become a site boosting coordinator?

oz: I thought it would be good for there to be some sessions that were at a time that would be suitiable for people that coulldn’t make the current sessions, such as some of the British ppl and some of the other aussies from the site (e.g R56CooperS11, seamonkeyz etc) that are working during the daytime to be able to join in boosting sessions as well. My main reasoning was that it was a good way to ensure that there are boosting co-ordinators from all around the world and that even each co-ordinator only held sessions at 8pm in their own timezone then there would be a greater range of sessions available for all members of the community, and I have to be honest and admit that there is an ulterior motive on hosting boosting sessions as most games that I put up for polls are games that I own and most likely need to get achievements in. I have hosted a session for a game where I didn’t need the multiplayer achievement and I would again if it was to help another member gain an achievement.

CM: Do you eat Vegemite?

oz: Do I eat vegemite? Of course I eat vegemite. I love vegemite whether it be in a sandwich, toastie or just on toast. The secret is to not spread it too thickly as then it can be overpowering.

CM: You've had a big goal to reach 100K gamerscore, what's the next goal after you reach that one?

oz: My next big goal would be to get my completion percentage up to 50%, followed by getting to 150k and also 200k.

CM: What's your favorite completion and what's your worse scar?

oz: My favourite completion would be Fable III as it took so long to get all the 50 legendary weapons and the fact that it is one of my favourite games . My worst scar would either be Lost Planet 2 with it’s huge TA ratio or Rockstar Table Tennis as I first played it in 2008 and have a total of 2 achievements from the game. It is positioned at the bottom of my games list on my xbox gamerscore list.

Thank you for the great interview and pictures!

Great Interview! It was nice to learn a little bit more about a boosting coordinator I have been in quite a few sessions with. I must admit that I had Dumb and Dumber flashbacks with the whole "shrimp on the barbie" segment.

You've been listening to Julia Gillard (our now former Prime Minister) is my guess on that comment. I think the way that words are pronunciaTED vary a lot from one part of the country to another. Even though she is a Victorian she speaks differently than I do, but she is better educaTED than I am and from a posh suburb of Melbourne while I am from regional area (where the ppl have more common sense)

Interesting point someone made while I was in Melbourne. We Queenslanders say 'Ay' as we finish a spoken sentence quite often, similar to the Canucks, but with more emphasis on pronouncing it as strong 'A' and less on carrying out an 'Air' type pronunciation.

When the yanks pronounce Australia it reminds me of the South African accent with how they emphasis the 'Or' type sounds.
